9 step marketing strategy for your Google+ Hangout

Planning to run Google+ Hangouts for your business? Well why not it’s a great way to get your message out there. As well as being able to have an online meeting with 9 other people with Hangouts on Air you can now broadcast your event live on YouTube, your Google+ page and your website.


Like any marketing activity you do, you need to first plan your strategy for your Google Hangout event. As we have run quite a few for our customers we have gained some good insight into what you need to consider when setting up your events, so here are some tips on what to consider:

What is the objective?

Are you looking to connect with your customers regularly via Google Hangouts – maybe running a monthly or weekly Hangout or user group. A Q&A session or panel debate / roundtable or perhaps it’s a one off use for a press conference or company announcement, coverage of a live event or a virtual conference. The sky really is the limit with Google Hangouts, we are hearing about new ideas every day.

Where will you film the event?

Our Pre Production for Google Hangouts guide discusses this as well as what you need to think about regarding actually filming the event. Do you have the in-house equipment and resources or do you need to outsource this aspect.


Live or on-demand?

Will you run the event live as a Hangout on Air or film it and edit it to run on Air at a later date? To get a polished look and quality to your event it can be better to pre-record and deliver the event on-demand.


Identify your participants / panel

Depending on the type of event you are running, you may need to decide who the participants will be? Do you need to find external speakers or experts in your field to join the event?


Content and subject matter

Decide what the agenda for your event will be and what you want to discuss. Pre planning any questions that you want to cover so that all speakers are prepared and there aren’t any awkward silences. Nominate a moderator to chair the event so that all the participants get a fair share of the time to contribute to the event.


Generate your audience

Promote your event early in order to maximize attendance. Who do you want to target for the event, do you have a database of the right contacts to send email marketing? Should you consider promoting the event via social media channels and which ones. Services such as Eventbrite make setting up an event invitation and registration easy; you can then monitor your registrations in one place. Or if you have the capability on your own website set up a dedicated landing page for the event where people can register. Optimize the web page with call to actions to help you with lead generation so that you convert your Hangout viewers into business!


Qualification and vetting

If you are inviting participants who may be using their own work / home computers to be one of the 9 on the Hangout panel then consider setting up a registration page that qualifies they have the correct technical requirements and that they understand how to participate in the event. Or contact each individually and run through the requirements, it is always advisable to have a test run the week before the live event. Make sure all participants have the agenda and timings for the event.


On the day

Carry out a pre-event rig to set up all the equipment you need and ask participants to be available a bit earlier to run a rehearsal and check connectivity. Once this is complete you are ready to run a successful event!


Post production

Once the event is over you have the opportunity to edit the footage if you are providing the event content on demand. Or if you ran a live event, it’s not too late to promote the on-demand version on your website and YouTube to people who didn’t attend or any other prospects you wish to target by email marketing, social media.
